There's not a lot of research into the perfect diet for APH, what we do know is that they are insectivores and in the wild would naturally eat insects, eggs, easy meats (pinkies, chicks ect) and perhaps some fruit/veg/plant material. From this information I choose to feed as natural of a diet as possible, using only good quality cat foods which are high in meat and low in fillers. I aim to supplement this with as many insects as possible with the occasional meat/egg item. Your hoglet will come used to eating the following mix of cat foods and I'd recommend choosing at least one grain free to feed alongside the lifestage cat food to maintain weight. I find most hedgehogs really enjoy the freeze dried foods so these are a good option if you have a fussy hog! Dry/wet food at Watoki - Lilys kitchen chicken - Millies lionheart - Eden holistic country cat - true instinct high meat kibble - true instinct freeze dried complete - Jollyes lifestage turkey cat food
Insects are of course an essential part of owning an insectivore, though not all insects are equal. Mealworms are quite easy to feed and loved by hogs but they are very high in phosphorous which can cause health problems, whereas wax worms are very high in fat which can cause weight issues, calci worms are high in calcium which can cause health problems in high quantities; these are some examples of why variety is key! Insects at Watoki - mealworms (low calcium, high phosphorous!) - buffalo worms - silk worms - calci worms (high calcium, low phosphorous!) - wax worms (high fat!) - locust - crickets - dubia roaches (high protein)
